GE Aerospace has entered uncharted territory by streamlining jet engine maintenance processes through digital applications.
With teams of product owners, UX, and development, the entire process of engine maintenance — from on-wing health analytics to engine diagnostics to maintenance shop scheduling — had to be streamlined and digitized from a surprisingly rudimentary system. Applications need to stand alone while also providing a cohesive user experience and data flow across applications — as maintenance is a complicated yet chronological process, happening in maintenance shops around the world.
Business analysis became just as pertinent as user experience - with every digitization of a process, the process itself had to be evaluated. In the absence of Business Analysts, UX took on a dual role.

Personas
Developing concise personas and product goals with product owners is essential to getting a product off the ground. As the product matures and the roadmap grows, UX directs business back to these goals to ensure we’re maturing with original intent.
Journey Mapping
We don’t have enough empathy in the world, in our experiences. That directly translates to digital experiences as well. After identifying the audience, it’s time to listen to them, figure out thoughts, needs, pain points, opportunities. Their information is power.
Wireframes
Multiple iterations of low fidelity wireframes and prototypes lead to a lot of trial, error, testing, and pivots before development builds a half-baked concept. It also clears the designer and user to focus on the brass tacks of content and interactions before final UI is introduced.
User Interviews & Tests
User interviews in discovery and user tests and demos before and after development are instrumental in translating problems or ideas into solutions, and fine tuning design into the best experience by release.
Applications
Applications are split per user base, with the goal of digitizing the entire maintenance process and gathering intelligence back and forth across products.
